University increases deliberate practice opportunities for nurses through AR/VR

2020

CHALLENGE

The university wanted to create a digital resource to address this gap and provide simulated high risk situations for students to practice.

In the face of a global nursing shortage, one university needed a new way for their nurses to meet their clinical placement requirements. Previous in-person workshops revealed training gaps around chemotherapy infusions, and the university wanted to create a digital resource to address this gap and provide simulated high risk situations for students to practice. By partnering with Kapeer, this university unlocked AR/VR solutions for their nurses to create mastery learning experiences—without needing to step foot in a clinical setting.

SOLUTION

Kapeer worked with this university to design a virtual learning environment for learners to recognize malfunctions with ports.

This learning environment simulated an extremely specialized and holistic scenario for nursing students to practice and apply their skills. The digital curriculum also provided nursing students, nurses, and pharmacists with crucial knowledge of risk factors associated with chemotherapy infusions that had been difficult or impossible to practice in in-person clinical settings.

RESULTS

As a result of working with Kapeer–

This university provided comprehensive training for their nurses virtually. Because the virtual learning environment allowed learners to explore and test multiple scenarios, the lesson better prepared nursing students for specific outcomes that they would be unlikely to experience in a traditional clinical setting. By simulating these high risk scenarios, the university equipped their students with lifesaving knowledge that will positively impact individual and community health outcomes. As the nursing shortage continues, this university will continue to leverage AR/VR to train and prepare their learners.
