CHALLENGE

Replace the physical infrastructure and deliver a high-quality learning experience.

The Nuclear Engineering department at a University faced a significant challenge to their senior-level lab course when their physical nuclear reactor shut down in the early 2000s. Without a functional reactor, students no longer had access to a hands-on learning experience to gain practical knowledge in nuclear reactor operations. The University needed an innovative solution to replace the physical infrastructure and deliver a high-quality learning experience.

SOLUTION

University initiated an Extended Reality (XR) project aimed at developing immersive content for their nuclear lab course.

These XR simulations replicated the experience of working with a nuclear reactor, providing students with a virtual environment to explore reactor components and operations. This XR learning experience replaced the physical infrastructure, offering an alternative yet realistic means of teaching nuclear reactor principles.

RESULTS

As a result of working with Kapeer–

The University successfully delivered a comprehensive nuclear lab course to senior undergraduate students. The eight experiments provided students with opportunities to explore the reactor, recognize spatial distribution, and conduct indirect measurements within the reactor pool — all without needing to practice with a physical nuclear reactor. The XR content not only filled the gap left by the physical reactor but also proved effective in recalling lecture material and connecting theoretical knowledge to future practical applications. The result was an engaging and educational experience that offered students a virtual platform to enhance their understanding of nuclear engineering principles.
