College leverages XR to turn abstract concepts into concrete learning

2022

CHALLENGE

Develop a teaching tool for their construction courses that could be delivered both virtually (VR) and via augmented reality (AR).

An architecture and urban planning college needed to develop a teaching tool for their construction courses that could be delivered both virtually (VR) and via augmented reality (AR). In the past, it was difficult to give students hands-on experiences for certain construction concepts, as construction sites are not consistently accessible and are difficult to coordinate visits due to safety liabilities.

SOLUTION

The college partnered with Kapeer to develop a cutting-edge teaching tool that incorporated both VR and AR.

VR enabled students to embody construction site models at a 1:1 scale, demystifying abstract concepts presented through traditional methods. The AR learning solution — embedded in a mobile app — enriched the course material by offering interactive 3D content accessible on smart devices.

RESULTS

As a result of working with Kapeer–

The college unlocked a more dynamic and effective educational experience, and students gained a deeper understanding of tectonic principles and material modules. The implementation of Extended Reality (XR) technology brought about transformative results for the construction courses at the college. Students experienced an enhanced learning environment, immersing themselves in realistic construction scenarios through VR and engaging with 3D content on their smart devices through AR. XR provided a virtual alternative that could be accessed at any time, giving students hands-on experiences without ever leaving the classroom.
